Contracts with Tesco workers must not be breached by company – Brian Stanley TD
More than 12,500 Mandate Trade Union members in Tesco Ireland are to be balloted for industrial action over the next five weeks after the company refused to accept a Labour Court recommendation and are now attempting to force significant wage cuts on a large number of staff members.
Speaking on this Brian Stanley TD said :
“Contracts with long term workers should be upheld and should not be unilaterally breached by the company. They owe it to their loyal work force and their Trade Union involved.
Tesco Ireland’s failure to implement a 2% pay increase for workers on pre-1996 contracts, along with a threat to unilaterally alter their contracts of employment is indefensible. This leaves the way for pay cuts of at least 15% per hour, a reduction in their hours of work, changes to work patterns and the loss of bonuses. These changes may result in a loss of between €200-€300 per week for some Tesco workers.”
Deputy Stanley concluded by saying :
“Tesco is a highly successful and profitable multi-national retailer in Ireland. I am calling on them to withdraw their threat to change conditions of employment without agreement and to fully implement the terms of the Labour Court Recommendation.
