Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Brian Stanley has welcomed the Government row back on mandatory minimum recycling charges but has called on the Minister to ensure people are incentivized to recycle.
Deputy Stanley stated:
“Sinn Féin welcomes the scrapping of mandatory minimum charges for recycling introduced under the previous Government”
“However, it is a matter of concern that collection companies will still be free to charge for collection of recyclable waste.”
“While the Minister has provided companies the option to provide free recycling collection service they are equally free to charge as much as they want.”
“The Minister must clarify his position on Green bin charges and ensure there is no disincentive for people to recycle.”
“There is an onus on the Government and the waste management companies that recycling becomes as widespread a practice as possible.”
“We need a guarantee that waste management companies do not use the flexibility the Minister has granted to profit from environmentally conscious citizens who recycle their waste.”
