Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Communications Brian Stanley has called for Minister for Communications Denis Naughten to begin taking decisive action on preserving the Post Office network.
Deputy Stanley said:
“I welcome the Government’s decision to delegate responsibility for postal services to a single Minister.
“This is something we in Sinn Féin have been calling for, as the previous division of responsibility between three Ministers led to a chaotic situation which has been the hallmark of this Government.
“Now that there is to be one Minister responsible for both An Post and the Post office network, it is time to end the delays and procrastination in tackling this issue head on.
“Minister Naughten must outline a plan of implementation for the Kerr report within the coming months.
“Raising the price of stamps, while closing hundreds of post offices, will only succeed in driving more business away from An Post.
“The Post office network needs measures to reinvigorate it, such as extending the services which post offices provide (to include motor tax renewals, business rates, rents and other Government payment services) and by the retention of existing services such as social welfare payments.”
